The National Civil Service Association of Persons with Disability, Federal Ministry of Women Affairs Chapter has called on the federal government to make provision for disability allowance for civil servants with disabilities to enable them afford assistive devices and attend to extra cost inquired due to their disabilities. The Chairman of the Association, Mr. Daniel Isiuwe made the call in Abuja at an event organised for staff with disabilities in the Ministry of women Affairs in commemoration of the 2020 international Day of Persons with Disabilities.According to Mr. Isiuwe who is visually impaired, the availability of assistive devices was fundamental in addressing most challenges faced by Persons with disabilities when carrying out some of their responsibilities at work.
“once those assistive devices are there, life is a lot easier. Like those that are having visual impairment, we have a laptop with software that make it functional. I need something like Abify reader to convert images to Microsoft words for me to read”A staff of the Ministry, Dr. Samuel Ebifa who is a Ph.D. holder and visually impaired from birth, explained that proactive implementation of the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities Prohibition Act would go a long way to check discrimination of persons with disabilities in the works and establish inclusion.
Another staff of the ministry, Miss. Nnenna Alabukwu who uses a wheel chair and is the author of the book “There is Ability in Disability” called on parents with children with disabilities not to isolate them rather they should be empowered.
“Parents with children with disability should stop hiding them. They should bring them out enrol them in school if they can read also if they cannot read enrol them to learn a skill. Family members with persons with disability should not isolate them, the society should not isolate them”The Director Human Resource Management of the Ministry, Mrs. Olufunke Osunkoya urged staff and management of the ministry to factor in the potentials of staff with disabilities in achieving the mandate of the ministry.
