The President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem, has warned lawyers to stop filing frivolous appeals seeking t Unitedo slow the wheel of justice.

Justice Dongban-Mensem, who was speaking in Lagos at the opening of this year’s Court of Appeal Annual Working Retreat, said that the appellate court would no longer be a dumping ground for cases left to linger endlessly by mischievous and flippant actors in the litigation process.

She noted that a good number of such appeals were filed to stall the judicial process.

The President of the Appeal Court said that the purpose of the retreat was for justices of the court to discuss the various aspects of their work, health, and wellbeing.

In a remark, the representative of the body of Senior Advocates of Nigeria, Prof Taiwo Osipitan called for the review of the qualifications of senior advocates, stating that most of the frivolous applications at the Appeal Court were filed by lawyers to meet with the prerequisite to becoming a member of the inner bar.

There are about five thousand Appeals and over six thousand Motions pending in the Lagos Division of the Court of Appeal as of December 1, 2020.
