Kebbi State has been selected to benefit from the Federal Government Cancer Access Partneship Programme of the Clinton Health Access Initiative Child and the American Cancer Society.
The Minister of Health, Dr. Osagie Ehanire, made this known through Dr. Uche Nwokwu, Consultant Haematologist, National Cancer Control Programme, Federal Ministry of Health Abuja, while on a courtesy visit to Kebbi State Governor, Senator Atiku Bagudu in Birnin Kebbi.
The Minister said, the aimed of the visit was to assess the two medical centers in the state that include Federal Medical Center Birnin Kebbi and the State Medical Center Kalgo for inclussion on the Cancer Access Partnership Programme.
He pointed out that, the decision was that, Cancer treatment has been very expensive and this is to bring the cost of the treatment to as low as fifty percent.
The Minister explains that, drugs would be available for the participating hospitals direct from the manufacturers.
He advised that, the State Government to be keeping record of
the drugs sold and patients either on weekly or montly bases for the entire Programme to also have its record.
Responding, the Kebbi State Governor, Senator Atiku Bagudu, said in the last few years, the state has been active in promotion of Cancer awereness, prevention, measures, screening and treatment.
Governor Bagudu, explains that the State has been having outreach Programme on Cancer which include Medical Doctors from different part of the world and some higher Institutions in the conutry.
The Governor revaeled that, first Cancer surgery was carried out at the State Medical Center Kalgo which was the first of its kind.
He pointed out that, Kebbi is a strategic state which boader with more than two countries, therefore with the Cancer treatment Programme in facilities in the state will encourage Medical tourism from Benin and Niger Republic, Burkina Faso and even Mali.
The Programme would be taking place at the Federal Medical Center and the State Medical Center Kalgo.
