FG strengthens emergency response against outbreak of diseases

The federal government says it has strengthened the country’s emergency preparedness and response system against the outbreak of diseases and epidemics in future.

The Minister of State for Health, Senator Adeleke Mamora, stated this at the launch of newly built infrastructure and equipment at the Federal Medical Center in Katsina.

He noted that from March last year to date, the federal government has committed huge resources in building infrastructure and equipping its health care centres and training its health care personnel across the country to tackle public health emergencies such as the deadly Covid-19 pandemic.

He said at the Federal Medical Center in Katsina, the federal government has established a fully equipped isolation centre which provides treatment and diagnostic services for patients with viral and haemorrhagic diseases such as lassa fever, ebola, Covid-19 and hepatitis.

The minister listed the projects launched at FMC Katsina to include a molecular and microbiology laboratory, a new accident and emergency unit, a pediatric unit, and a ring road around the medical center constructed by the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency, FERMA.

He urged the hospital management to make good use of the facilities which will increase its revenue and minimize the frequency of medical tourism by people of the state.

Earlier, the Chief Medical Director of the center, Dr. Suleiman Bello explained that the pediatric unit of the hospital has been upgraded to include a pediatric intensive care unit, a pediatric isolation ward, additional pediatric wards, a pharmacy and a research laboratory.

In his remarks, the State Governor, Alhaji Aminu Bello Masari expressed appreciation to the federal government for the wide range of medical services provided by the hospital which have greatly reduced cases of mortality and morbidity among patients with various health conditions in the state.
