The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr.Geoffrey Onyeama says the temporary suspension of Twitter in the country by the Federal government is in the interest of national security and sustaining peace.
He stated this in Abuja when he summoned representatives of the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Ireland and the European Union following a joint statement they issued.
Briefing journalists after a closed door meeting with the ambassadors,Mr Onyeama said Presidnet Buhari was keen on ensuring the peace and security of Nigerians and Nigeria.
He said all the Nigerian government was advocating is the responsible use of social media platforms and not the one that would disintegrate the country.
The United States Ambassador to Nigeria, Mary Beth Leonard said as partners, the U.S and other partners would continue to engage with Nigeria to uphold human rights and the rule of law.
The US Ambassador to Nigeria said while they recognized that there are issues of irresponsible use of social media they were also glad the Federal Government have interacted with twitter.
She said many of the things the Minister is referring to, such as inciting or committing violence are crimes which the government of Nigeria had legitimate interest in and prosecuting those who commit such crimes.
