The Police command in Anambra state has confirmed an attack on security checkpoint along Ihiala Owerri road .
The incident which occurred in the early hours of Saturday caused tension and panic among residents and motorists in the area.
According to eye witness account, yet to be identified hoodlums attacked a military checkpoint along the ihiala axis of the Onitsha Owerri highway and allegedly killed three officers on duty.
Confirming the incident in a telephone interview, the Police Public Relations Officer in Anambra State , Mr Tochi Ikenga said the yet to be identified persons attacked a military formation in the area but that the command was yet to get the full details of the incident.
He said upon receiving the information, the Area Commander in charge of Ihiala , led other security agents to return normalcy to the area.
Mr Ikenga enjoined road users and residents to go about their lawful duties as the command awaits proper situation report on the incident from the military .
“There was an attack on military checkpoint along Ihiala but the details has not yet come. Normalcy has been restored and there is moment there now. We are waiting for the military to give us the level of damage and what actually happened”.
Our Correspondent reports that the incident also caused heavy human and vehicular traffic withing the bridge head axis of Onitsha due to security personnel who were on ground to ensure safety.
Normalcy has since returned as vehicles are now moving in and out of the area.
